Kalamatas
is located at an upscale strip mall in the trendy
Green Hills community. Maher and Kitty Fawaz
along with partner and executive chef Beth Collins
have created a health conscience Mediterranean
restaurant. The atmosphere of the restaurant
is that of a Mediterranean bistro with warm
brown and amber hues creating a sense of warmth
and relaxation. Guests are often greeted by
Maher who makes their meal fresh when ordered.
The menu is filled with an array of tasty items
created for a health conscience clientele. Most
of the menu was created by Collins, but a few
items draw from Kitty’s experience as
a registered dietitian with Saint Thomas Hospital.
Collins worked formerly at the Mad Platter
and met Kitty while working at the St. Thomas
heart healthy cooking school. The Fawaz family
also own Farooge; a casual Mediterranean
restaurant on Charlotte Avenue, and Gyros
Cafe in Murfreesboro.
The menu is filled with delights such as savory
lamb, the best hummus around, and stuffed grape
leaves whose rice stuffing balances the tart
pickle flavor of the leaves. The tuna salad
remains healthy without the fatty mayonnaise
and instead contains lemon, oil along with capers
wrapped in a pita. The deserts are not to be
missed. Tempting Baklava awaits at the counter
and the light and rich tiramisu is becoming
a favorite.
